Historical spots in Porto to visit

Climb the Clérigos Tower

The Clerigo Towers is a large tower located at the Clérigos Brotherhood church built in the 18th century. You can spot in from several locations around the city, it’s definitely one of the top 10 things to do in Porto in my opinion.

The tower provides amazing 360 degree views of Porto but there are 240 steps to climb to get to the top. This might not be advisable with very young children though.

The only difficulty to get to the top is the fact that there are many people going up and down these narrow steps, oftentimes you have to stop to let a bunch a people through so you can carry on the climb, it can feel pretty crowded.

We thought that the climb was worth it. Besides the tour you also have entrance to the Clérigos church and its exhibition.

Livraria Lello & irmão

Livraria Lello has been a bookstore very much of its times ever since 1906, carrying within it over a century of history and stories, imbued into its architectural surroundings and also into the bookish knowledge that shape the experiences of those who visit and those who read. It’s said that J.K. Rowling, the famous author of Harry Potter books, was inspired buy this famous Book shop.

Visit Casa da Música

If your family loves music, but your kids aren’t quite ready to sit through a concert, the striking Casa da Musica has an ingenious solution with its purple room. Open to three to 10-year-olds, there are discovery sessions and the chance to make music while adults enjoy the main programmes elsewhere in the building.

There are also guided tours which are free for children under 12.

Crystal Palace gardens

The crystal palace gardens offer one of the best views of the city.

Here in this large green space kids can run and play while you can enjoy the outdoors in a relaxing setting and maybe bring a picnic with you.

Visit Foz do Douro

This is the area where the River Douro meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is a few kilometers away from Porto city center but easily accessible. Just take a ride with the Old Tram Enfante line 1 or take the bus number 500.

Along with the beautiful coastal area there is a long promenade that is perfect for walking and cycling. You also get the change to stop and play a round of mini golf in the Passeio Alegre city park.
