Overnight stays by foreign tourists have doubled, compared to January 2022

2023 began with significant growth within the tourism accommodation sector.

Overnight stays by Portuguese and foreign tourists increased in the first month of the year. The internal market evolved up to 38.7%, and the external market has registered a growth amount of 101.3%. The data points to 1.5 million guests (an increase of 72.5%) and 3.5 million overnight stays (up to 74.5%). Most of these statistics correspond to foreign tourists, with a total of 2.3 million growth in overnight stays in the first month of 2023.

The data on the tourist activity for January 2023 was released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which translated to a total of 3.6 million overnight accommodations (internal + external) within the tourism sector. The internal market has contributed with 1.2 million overnight stays (an increase of 38.7% compared to January 2022), while the external market recorded an increase of 101.3% in overnight stays, compared to the same period in 2022.

… North Americans look for Portugal!

INE also highlights a major growth in the North American markets (53.1%), followed by the Polish (65.4%), and the Irish (48.1%). It also reported that most of the foreign tourists in January were British (14.8%), followed by German (11.3%) and Spanish (10.2%) tourists.
