Casa das Lérias, in Amarante, offers a sweet stay next to the Tâmega

With flour, sugar, almonds, and water, lérias are made, one of the convent sweets from Amarante that gives its name to the recent pet-friendly local accommodation, in front of the Tâmega River.

Casa das Lérias is a project developed by the Canadian group Mercan Properties, which kept the original name, honoring the memory of Alcino dos Reis (1885-1967), the man who is credited with recovering and disseminating the recipes for convent sweets that were produced in the Convent of Santa Clara de Amarante.

The name remains, as does the sale of the candy, at the Café & Bar, but since 2021 people have also been sleeping in the art deco building, on Rua Cândido dos Reis. The idea was “to rehabilitate a historic building, which is part of the cultural heritage of Amarante”, explains Niklas Breitenbach, from the Ace Hospitality Management group, responsible for managing the project.

The rehabilitation resulted in 23 rooms of eight types, overlooking the river or the street, with sober interiors, where earthy and golden tones combine. All are equipped with a television, minibar, and coffee machine, and can receive a crib. In some, there is the possibility of adding a bed, for children up to 12 years old.

The Café & Bar, on the ground floor, serves as a breakfast room and, between 11 am and 8 pm, opens to the public, who can find homemade convent sweets, coffee service, and light meals. The space extends to the pergola balcony, covered by a century-old wisteria, which attracts many passers-by. Already for exclusive use are the pool and garden.

By water and by land

Gliding along the waters of the Tâmega aboard an outrigger or taking a walk in the forest park, an eight-minute walk from the accommodation, among redwoods, lime trees, plane trees, and maples, are some of the suggestions for getting to know better the city where the painter Amadeo de was born. Souza-Cardoso, whose work is on display at the municipal museum named after him.
