Discover Évora: the Portuguese history book

Just one hour-and-a-half distance from the country’s capital – Lisbon, Évora is one of the most well-guarded secrets of Portugal. Located in the heart of Alentejo, this city is a live cathedral for adventurous tourists. looking for a place within history.

Évora is the home of the most extraordinary monuments and memorable experiences in Portugal. As an important landmark in the country’s history, Évora is known for its traditional gastronomy and beautiful culture, considered by UNESCO a World Heritage Site in 1986. The reason for this distinction is the fact that the city is an untouched example of Portugal's golden age, after the earthquake destruction in 1755.

This live 'city museum' has maintained its traditional charm throughout the years, and it is now considered one of the most emblematic destinations of Portugal. Its heritage goes way before the seventeenth century, from the megalithic era to the Roman settlement and the Visigoths, who fortified the city.  

The best way to visit the city is on foot. Its cozy and welcoming environment allows its visitors to walk through the narrow streets of white houses and discover historical monuments and important landmarks that reveal the Évora’s and the richness of its heritage.

Diana’s Roman Temple

One of the most iconic and well-preserved Roman monuments in Europe. Built 2000 years ago, it is believed that the monument is dedicated to Diana, the goddess of hunting, although scholars believe it was dedicated to the Roman Emperor Augustus. From this nearly 2,000-year-old structure, the podium and part of the columns remain. It is located at the highest point of the city, between the cathedral and Évora’s main square - Jardim Diana.

Bone’s Chapel 

Although the name might be scary, this is a reason why this is the most visited monument of Évora. It’s the finest Gothic and Manueline impressions of the 14th century, with a fascinating display of human bones and skulls, creating decorative patterns in the walls and columns. The Chapel of Bones was a part of the royal church in 1480, it includes a museum and iconic classical paintings.

Évora’s Cathedral 

It Is the largest medieval cathedral of Portugal, with different architectural styles of Romanesque and Gothic this is an important landmark for Portugal’s history since it was where the flags of Vasco da Gama ships were blessed, before their departure. This cathedral is the home of one of the oldest museums of sacred art, and the house of one of the oldest European Renaissance organs. The roof terrace has one of the most overlooking views of the city’s landscapes.

Iconic churches 

Built between 1480 and 1510, São Francisco’s Church is the most beautiful example of the Gothic-Manueline style of architecture. Its interior, garnished by emblematic ornaments, makes this church an art masterpiece for its visitors. 

In an 8-minute walk from there, located in the historic city center, the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça, founded in 1511, it’s a beautiful example of a renaissance church of the 14-century, known for its detail and iconic façade.

Dom Manuel Palace

This is one of the most beautiful and delightful places in the city, surrounded by a calm and relaxing green garden. Dom Manuel Palace was once the royal palace and it is the home of what’s left the 16th-century “Queen’s Gallery”, which has been restored to a dedicated museum of the city’s history.

Évoras cultural experience is behind expectations. There are a few other attractions to keep an eye out for in the city, and a lot of places to wander by walking. Aside from its famous locations, Évora has one of the most iconic gastronomy tastings in the country. Every village has its unique touch! as well as a catalog of delicious Portuguese pastries such as Queijadas of Requeijão.
