Tourism sector revenues grow in April

Occupancy rates within the hospitality sector continue to rise! Portugal registered a total of 2.7 million guests and 6.8 million overnight stays in April.

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics, released by the end of May, these numbers translate to growth rates of 16.5% and 13.8%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2022.

The estimate for Tourism Activity in April shows that the internal market contributed to two million overnight stays (+7.3%), while the external markets accounted for 4.8 million overnight stays (+16.8%).

Among foreign tourists, the British accounted for 18.1%, the Spanish market a share of 11.9%, while the German market (11.4% of the total). In terms of accommodation classification, overnight stays continue to exceed 2019 figures, mainly in rural and residential tourism. In hotels (82.3% of the total) the number of overnight stays increased by 12.9% (+13.0% compared to April 2019), whereas in residential and rural tourism share of 3.6%. 

In the first four months of 2023, INE reports a 30% average increase in overnight stays, around 15%, compared to the pandemic year.
