Porto: New record for tourism sector, over 1.5 million overnight stays

The first four months of the year registered a new increase in tourism accommodations with 1,569,543 overnight stays in the Municipality of Porto only.

The data analysis is from the National Statistics Institute (INE), and the values are already above the monthly statistics for overnight stays in the years 2022 and 2019.

Between January and April, the accommodation sector in Porto registered about 46.7%, the correspondent of 1,569,543 million overnight stays in the city, to 3,358,509 in the entire region. The number of guests in the city totalized 746,489 of the 1,818,327 travelers counted in the Northern region.

The numbers correspond to an increase of 48% compared to the same period in 2022, and 31% compared to 2019, the pre-pandemic year.

The Easter effect shows that in April, the city of Porto registered more than 537 thousand overnight stays (7.9% of the national total), making the city one of the most sought-after destinations by the internal and external market.

According to data released by INE, in these four months, the domestic market contributed with more than 291 thousand overnight stays (18.5%), while the external market recorded around 1.278 million overnight stays (81.5%) in the city.

Under this analysis, there’s a slight increase in the average stay of 2.06 nights, to 2.10 nights, compared to the same period in the previous year. Regarding the average income per available room, the data also shows a significant increase in the Northern region in the first four months of 2023, with an average of 36.8€ (+35% than in 2022 and + 21.85% than in 2019).

Concerning the income in tourist accommodation establishments, they’ve also registered an increase of more than 211 million euros (+44.14% compared to 2022 and +46.20% compared to 2019), a growth that proves a greater economic dynamism of the sector

In Porto, tourists seek the Ribeira area one of the most popular attractions in the region, by the gastronomy and its architecture. Some travelers come for tourism, while others choose Porto for remote work, highlighting the welcoming art and the warmth of the northerners.

In recent years, Porto has attracted more and more European tourists - with the Spanish, French, and British topping the list. However, in recent years, the city has drawn the attention of new tourist markets such as America and Brazil.
