Hotel boom: the Algarve attracts big projects - this was the title of Vivre Le Portugal, the french magazine when Algarve's reputation as Portugal's premier tourist destination continues to attract major hotel operators, as they invest hundreds of millions of euros in the region at an incredible rate. Several new hotels are already under construction in the area, while others have just started construction or are undergoing renovations and rebranding.

From one corner of the Algarve to the other, from the coast to the less explored inland areas, hotels are springing up. Others are being renovated or are changing ownership or management. What all the projects have in common is the belief that the region's hotel industry still has a lot of room for growth.

At the helm of many new projects in the Algarve is the Mercan Properties Group, which took over from the California Urban Beach Hotel in Albufeira this year and is also developing six other hotel projects in the Algarve.

On Tuesday afternoon, the group laid the foundation stone of the Hotel Lagos Marina, a tourist development just a stone's throw from the Lagos Marina, which will host two hotels – the five-star hotel; Hotel Lagos Marina, Curio Collection by Hilton, with 189 rooms, and the four-star; Hilton Garden Inn Lagos, with 90 rooms. The project, which is scheduled to open in 2026, represents an investment of €107.8 million and is expected to create 188 direct jobs.
